Romania Transit Visa
The Romania Transit Visa covers foreign nationals passing through Romania, or through the international transit areas of Schengen airports, on their way to a third destination. According to Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), Romania became a full Schengen member on 1 January 2025, and in accordance with the Community Code on Visas, Romania no longer issues its own separate transit visas (previously symbol B); instead, third-country nationals transiting through the territory of one or more Schengen Member States are issued a Uniform Transit Visa (part of the Schengen Type C/A framework), valid for transit through the international transit areas of Member States’ airports. As with all Romania Visa categories, a Schengen visa allows the holder to travel to and transit through any Schengen state, but does not automatically entitle the holder to enter the Schengen area — border authorities may refuse entry if proof of the purpose and specifics of the journey is not provided.
Eligibility
Based on official MAE guidance, applicants for a Transit Visa (via the Uniform Visa/Airport Transit framework) must generally:
- Be a foreign national transiting through Romania or another Schengen state en route to a third country, and a national of a country whose nationals require a visa for this purpose.
- Hold a biometric passport, issued no more than 10 years prior to application, valid for at least 90 days after the planned date of departure from the Schengen Area.
- Have a confirmed onward flight ticket and travel plan to a destination outside the Schengen Area.
- Not intend to leave the international transit area of the airport, for airport-transit-only itineraries.
- Nationals who already hold a border-crossing document with a visa issued by an EU/EEA Member State, or by a state whose citizens are not required an entry visa to those states, may benefit from specific facilitations — the Romanian visa should not exceed the validity of such visas.
Government Visa Fees
Under the EU Visa Code fee schedule applied by Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs:
| Fee Type | Amount |
| Uniform/Airport Transit Visa – standard rate | EUR 90 |
| Uniform/Airport Transit Visa – children aged 6–11 | EUR 45 |
| Uniform/Airport Transit Visa – children under 6 | Free of charge |
| Reduced rate for nationals of states with bilateral visa facilitation agreements with the EU | EUR 35 or EUR 70, depending on the agreement |
| INR Equivalent | Information may vary depending on the visa category and individual circumstances |
The visa fee is charged beforehand, in EUR, and is not refunded in case of refusal.
Processing Time
According to MAE guidance, it is highly recommended that visa applications, including for transit purposes, be lodged at least 2 weeks before the estimated date of departure, and no more than 6 months in advance. Standard Schengen visa applications are generally decided within 15 calendar days, extendable up to 45 calendar days in exceptional circumstances. Given that transit itineraries are often time-sensitive, applicants should apply well in advance of their travel date to avoid any risk of a missed connection.
