Who Can Apply for a U.S. Passport?

U.S. passport services are available to eligible U.S. citizens. Depending on the applicant’s circumstances, the appropriate process may include a first-time passport application, adult renewal, child passport application, replacement of a lost or damaged passport, or correction/change of passport information.

For applications outside the United States, U.S. citizens should follow the instructions provided by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.

U.S. Passport Fees

U.S. passport fees depend on the applicant’s age, application type, and whether the applicant is applying for a passport book, passport card, or both.

For example, current U.S. Department of State fees include:

Application Type

Government Fee

Adult First Passport Book$130 + $35 acceptance fee
Adult First Passport Card$30 + $35 acceptance fee
Adult Passport Book & Card$160 + $35 acceptance fee
Adult Passport Book Renewal$130
Adult Passport Card Renewal$30
Adult Passport Book & Card Renewal$160

Fees can change, and applicants applying through a U.S. embassy or consulate outside the United States may have different payment and submission instructions. Applicants should verify the applicable fee before submission.

U.S. Passport Processing Time

Passport processing time depends on the application type, location, submission method, and individual circumstances.

For routine applications processed in the United States, the current U.S. Department of State guidance lists 4–6 weeks for routine processing and 2–3 weeks for expedited processing, excluding mailing time. Applicants outside the United States should follow the processing guidance of the relevant U.S. embassy or consulate.

Documents Required for U.S. Passport Applications

Depending on the type of application, applicants may need:

  • Existing U.S. passport, where applicable
  • Proof of U.S. citizenship
  • Government-issued identification
  • Completed passport application form
  • Recent U.S. passport photograph
  • Name-change documentation, where applicable
  • Supporting documents for special circumstances
  • Applicable U.S. passport fees
  • Additional documents requested by the U.S. Department of State or U.S. embassy/consulate

The exact document requirements depend on whether the application is a first passport, renewal, replacement, child passport, correction, or another type of passport service.

Can an Indian citizen apply for a U.S. passport?
No. A U.S. passport is proof of U.S. citizenship and identity. An Indian citizen who does not have U.S. citizenship cannot obtain a U.S. passport simply by having a U.S. visa, living in India, or travelling to the United States.
Can U.S. citizens living in India renew their U.S. passport?
Yes. U.S. citizens outside the United States should follow the instructions of the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate for passport renewal and other passport services.
Which form is used for U.S. passport renewal?
Eligible adult applicants generally use Form DS-82 for passport renewal. Applicants who do not meet the DS-82 requirements may need to apply using Form DS-11.
Can I get a U.S. passport if I have a U.S. visa?
No. A U.S. visa allows an eligible foreign national to seek admission to the United States for the purpose and period permitted by the visa. It does not provide U.S. citizenship or eligibility for a U.S. passport.
Is a U.S. passport book different from a passport card?
Yes. A passport book is the standard document for international travel, including international air travel. A passport card has more limited use and is not valid for international air travel.
How long is a U.S. passport valid?
Validity depends on the applicant's age and passport type. Adult U.S. passport books generally have longer validity than passports issued to children under 16. The passport itself remains valid until it expires or is otherwise replaced or invalidated under applicable rules.
