Romania Tourist Visa
The Romania Tourist Visa is a Schengen short-stay visa (Category C) issued by Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) to foreign nationals travelling to Romania, or the wider Schengen Area, for tourism. According to official MAE guidance, Romania became a full member of the Schengen Area on 1 January 2025, meaning Romania now issues visas for stays of no more than 90 days in any 180-day period across the territory of Schengen Member States. A short-stay (Type C) Schengen visa issued by Romania allows entry for vacation, short business trips, visiting family, or attending short courses, and also permits travel throughout the rest of the Schengen Area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, so long as Romania is either the applicant’s main destination or first point of entry. As with all Romania Visa categories, obtaining a visa does not confer an automatic right of entry, since specific checks are carried out at Border Crossing Points.
Eligibility
Based on official MAE guidance, applicants for a Tourist Visa must generally:
- Be a foreign national travelling to Romania for tourism, and a citizen of a country whose nationals require a Schengen visa.
- Hold a biometric passport, issued no more than 10 years prior to application, valid for at least 90 days after the planned date of departure from the Schengen Area.
- Provide evidence of the purpose and conditions of the intended stay (trip reservation, travel agency confirmation, or itinerary).
- For applicants from certain countries: obtain an invitation approved by the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI-MAI), if their nationality is among those specifically requiring this for tourism visa applications.
- Hold travel medical insurance valid for the Schengen Area, with minimum coverage of EUR 30,000.

The visa fee is charged beforehand, in EUR, and is not refunded in case of refusal.
Processing Time
According to MAE guidance, it is highly recommended that visa applications be lodged at least 2 weeks before the estimated date of departure, and no more than 6 months in advance. Standard Schengen visa applications are generally decided within 15 calendar days, extendable up to 30 days in individual cases, and up to a maximum of 45 calendar days in exceptional circumstances. For applicants whose nationality requires an IGI-MAI approved invitation for tourism, note that invitations are processed within 60 days of submission, which should be factored into the overall timeline before the visa application itself can be lodged.
