Romania Family Reunification Visa
The Romania Family Reunification Visa, officially the Long-Stay Visa for Family Reunification (symbol D/VF), is issued by Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) to third-country nationals seeking to join a family member legally residing in Romania, or a Romanian citizen, in order to regain family unity. According to official Romanian consular guidance, qualifying categories include spouses of Romanian citizens or of qualifying resident sponsors, unmarried partners cohabiting with a Romanian citizen with at least one child together, children of the sponsor (including adopted children) under specific age and dependency conditions, and first-degree relatives in the ascending line of the sponsor or spouse who cannot provide for themselves. A third-country national who has already entered Romania for family reunification cannot themselves act as sponsor to invite other family members under this same purpose. As with all Romania Visa categories, the visa can be denied if the application is based on a marriage of convenience or a state of bigamy or polygamy.
Eligibility
Based on official MAE and IGI guidance, applicants for a D/VF Family Reunification Visa must generally:
- Be the spouse of a Romanian citizen, or of a foreign sponsor holding a qualifying residence status (temporary residence permit valid for one year, EU Blue Card, ICT/mobile ICT permit, long-term residence status, refugee status, or subsidiary protection).
- Be an unmarried partner cohabiting with an unmarried Romanian citizen, with at least one child together.
- Be a child of the sponsor, spouse, or partner (adopted children included), under 21, or continuing studies and under 26, or unable to support themselves for medical reasons.
- Be a first-degree relative in the ascending line of the sponsor or spouse, unable to provide for themselves and without appropriate family support in their country of origin.
- Not have entered Romania previously for family reunification purposes themselves while seeking to now act as sponsor for others under this same category.

Processing Time
According to official guidance, the D/VF visa application requires a notification/endorsement letter from the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI) before the visa itself can be issued by the Romanian diplomatic mission or consular post in the family members’ country of residence. Once family members arrive in Romania, they are required to obtain a residence permit, and the application for that permit is generally resolved within 30 days of submission. Extension of the residence right is handled separately for each family member, for a maximum period of up to 5 years. Applicants should apply well in advance, given the multi-step process involving IGI endorsement, visa issuance, and subsequent residence permit application.
