Romania Student Visa
The Romania Student Visa, officially the Long-Stay Visa for Study Purposes (symbol D/SD), is issued by Romania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) to third-country nationals accepted to study, train, or participate in exchange programmes in Romania. According to official Romanian Consulate guidance, this type of long-stay visa is granted to third-state nationals applying as students, trainees, or pupils, to those who partake in a pupil exchange scheme or educational project, and to third-state nationals accepted for studies based on international documents to which Romania is party. A short-stay Schengen visa only covers stays of up to 90 days, so students on longer academic programmes require this dedicated D/SD visa. As with all Romania Visa categories, the final decision on approval rests solely with the competent Romanian consular authorities, following endorsement from the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI).
Eligibility
Based on official MAE and IGI guidance, applicants for a D/SD Student Visa must generally:
- Be a foreign national accepted into a study programme, training scheme, or pupil/educational exchange in Romania.
- Hold a valid passport.
- Provide a letter of acceptance from the Romanian educational institution.
- Hold travel medical insurance valid for the entire period of the visa’s validity, with minimum coverage of EUR 30,000, covering repatriation, urgent health attention, and emergency hospital treatment.
- Provide a Police Clearance Certificate from the applicant’s home country, legalised by the relevant Ministry of Foreign Relations.

Once this internal approval is obtained, the visa itself is typically issued for a maximum of 90 days initially, and the overall process — from securing university acceptance to visa issuance — commonly takes around 2 to 3 months when accounting for admission timelines. Applicants are strongly advised to lodge their application well in advance, as failing to do so in time could make it impossible to obtain the visa before the start of their programme.
