Taiwan Transit Visa
Taiwan does not generally issue a separately named “Transit Visa” for most travellers. Under the Bureau of Consular Affairs’ (BOCA) rules, many nationalities can pass through Taiwan without a visa if they remain within the international transit area of the airport and continue their journey within 24 hours, since the Taoyuan and other international airports operate transit and transfer facilities that do not require formal entry into Taiwan. Travellers who must clear immigration — for example, to leave the airport during a longer layover, or because visa-free transit is not available to their nationality — generally need to rely on the Travel Authorization Certificate (TAC), an eVisa, a landing visa, or a standard Visitor Visa, rather than a distinct transit visa product. All travellers, regardless of visa status, must also complete an Online Arrival Card (TWAC) within 7 days before arrival. As with all Taiwan entry categories, the decision on entry and any visa rests solely with the Bureau of Consular Affairs, the relevant Taiwan overseas mission, or the National Immigration Agency.
Eligibility
- Holds a valid passport with sufficient remaining validity
- Has a confirmed onward flight or travel ticket to a third country
- Remains within the airport’s international transit area for a connection of no more than 24 hours, where relying on visa-free transit
- If needing to clear immigration or stay longer, is eligible for the Travel Authorization Certificate (TAC, available to Indian nationals for stays of up to 14 days), an eVisa, a landing visa, or applies for a standard Visitor Visa
- Not exempt or ineligible under Taiwan’s designated country and nationality lists

Processing Time
Travellers who qualify for visa-free international transit or the free Travel Authorization Certificate do not go through a multi-day visa processing timeline, since the TAC is typically approved online. For Indian nationals who need to clear immigration and do not qualify for the TAC or an eVisa, and must instead apply for a standard Visitor Visa, processing generally takes around 5 to 7 working days at the relevant TECC office, with an express service available for an additional fee that can reduce this to around 2 to 3 working days. Given the time-sensitive nature of transit itineraries, travellers are advised to confirm their exact requirement well before their connecting flight.
