Taiwan Student Visa
The Taiwan Student Visa route depends on the length of study. Foreign nationals planning to study in Taiwan for more than 180 days (such as full-time bachelor’s, master’s, PhD, or long-term Mandarin language programmes) generally apply for a Resident Visa for Foreign Students, issued by the Bureau of Consular Affairs (BOCA), Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of China (Taiwan). Those enrolling in shorter courses of 180 days or less can instead apply for a Visitor Visa for the purpose of study. Applications from India are submitted at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Center (TECC). After arrival, students on a Resident Visa must register with the National Immigration Agency to obtain an Alien Resident Certificate (ARC). As with all Taiwan visa categories, the decision to approve a Student Visa application rests solely with the Bureau of Consular Affairs or the relevant TECC office.
Eligibility
- Holds a letter of admission or enrolment confirmation from a recognised Taiwan educational institution
- Holds a valid passport with at least 6 months’ remaining validity beyond the intended date of entry
- Able to demonstrate sufficient financial means to cover tuition and living costs
- Holds a police clearance certificate from the country of origin, where required
- Provides parental/guardian consent, if a minor
- Meets any language ability requirements specified for the programme

Fees are payable by demand draft in favour of the relevant TECC office; cash, cheque, and online payment are not accepted. Fees for applications made overseas in other countries may differ; BOCA’s standard schedule quotes US$66 for a single entry and US$132 for a multiple entry Resident Visa made outside Taiwan. Information may vary depending on individual circumstances.
Processing Time
Resident Visa applications processed inside Taiwan (for example, when changing from a Visitor Visa after arrival) generally take about 8 working days, according to BOCA’s published guidance. For applications submitted from India at the TECC, standard Visitor and Resident Visa processing generally takes around 5 to 7 working days, with an express service available for an additional fee that can reduce this to around 2 to 3 working days. Processing speed depends on verification of the institution’s enrolment confirmation and completeness of financial and academic documents. Students must generally register with the National Immigration Agency for their Alien Resident Certificate within 30 days of arrival, or within 30 days of the Resident Visa’s issuance.
