Unlike the longer-term Family Visa reserved for close relatives of Russian citizens, the standard Private Visa covers a broader range of hosts — friends, unmarried partners, or more distant relatives — for shorter stays of up to 90 days. As with every Russia Visa category, the final decision on approval rests solely with the Russian diplomatic mission, consular post, or the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Eligibility
You may apply for a Russia Visitor (Private) Visa if:
- You intend to visit a friend, relative, or acquaintance residing in Russia.
- Your host can obtain an official electronic invitation from the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD/GUVM) on your behalf.
- Your stay does not exceed 90 days within the visa’s validity period.
- You hold a valid passport with at least two blank visa pages and sufficient remaining validity.
- You have arranged travel medical insurance valid for your entire stay in Russia.
If your intended host is a close relative — spouse, parent, child, sibling, or grandparent/grandchild who is a Russian citizen — you may instead be eligible for the longer-term Family Visa, which offers a different application route.
