Russia Scientific & Technical Visa
The Russia Scientific & Technical Visa covers travel to Russia for scientific research, academic collaboration, technical conferences, or related professional communications and contacts. Under Russian visa law, this falls under the broader Humanitarian Visa category, alongside cultural, sporting, religious, and charitable purposes. It is issued on the basis of an official invitation obtained by the Russian host institution — such as a university, research institute, or scientific organisation — from either the Ministry of Internal Affairs or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia. Travellers whose nationality is eligible for Russia’s unified e-Visa may alternatively use the e-Visa for short scientific visits of up to 30 days, since the e-Visa explicitly covers participation in scientific events. As with every Russia Visa category, the final decision on approval rests solely with the Russian diplomatic mission or consular post.
Eligibility
You may apply for a Russia Scientific & Technical Visa if:
- You are travelling to Russia for scientific research, academic collaboration, technical conferences, or related professional activities.
- Your Russian host institution has obtained an official invitation on your behalf from the Ministry of Internal Affairs or Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- You hold a valid passport with at least two blank visa pages and sufficient remaining validity.
- You have arranged travel medical insurance valid for your entire stay in Russia.
If your nationality is eligible for the unified e-Visa and your visit fits within its 30-day, single-entry limits, you may use the e-Visa instead, without needing a formal invitation.
Government Visa Fees
| Category | Fee |
| Single/double-entry humanitarian visa (up to 90 days) | Consular fee varies by nationality and processing speed |
| Multiple-entry humanitarian visa (1 to 3 years) | Higher consular fee, varying by nationality |
| Unified e-Visa (where the nationality and trip qualify) | Approximately USD 52, except children under 6, who are exempt |
All visa fees are non-refundable, regardless of the outcome. A multiple-entry humanitarian visa, while valid for 1 to 3 years, does not constitute a long-term residence permit.
Russian Visa Processing Time
Standard humanitarian visa processing, once the invitation is obtained, can range from around 4 working days for express service to up to 20 working days for standard service. Obtaining the invitation itself from the Ministry of Internal Affairs or Ministry of Foreign Affairs can take additional time, depending on the host institution’s processing. The unified e-Visa, where applicable, is processed within 4 calendar days of a complete submission.
