Child Visa Overview
The Child visa is a family-stream Australia Visa that allows a dependent child of an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen to live permanently in Australia with their parent. There are two related subclasses depending on the child’s location at the time of application: Subclass 101 for children applying from outside Australia, and Subclass 802 for children already in Australia who meet the eligibility criteria. To qualify, the applicant must be the biological, adopted, or step-child of the sponsoring parent, and generally must be under 18, or in some cases a dependent full-time student under 25, or have a permanent disability. The sponsoring parent must be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen. Approval is decided solely by the Department of Home Affairs.
Child Visa Fees
| Fee Type | Government Fee (AUD) |
| Main Applicant, Subclass 101 or 802 | Approx. $2,710 |
Visa Application Charges are reviewed periodically by the Department of Home Affairs. Skills assessment and English test fees are separate and vary by assessing authority and test provider. Fees are generally non-refundable, even if the visa is refused. Exchange rates fluctuate, so INR values are approximate. Information may vary depending on individual circumstances; confirm the current fee at immi.homeaffairs.gov.au.
Child Visa Processing Time
Processing time for the Australia Child Visa depends on which subclass applies, the completeness of relationship and identity documents, and current processing volumes. Family-stream visas, including the Child visa, are processed according to published processing priorities, and cases involving compassionate or compelling circumstances may, in limited situations, be considered for priority handling, though this is never guaranteed. Because proving the parent-child relationship and the sponsor’s status are central to the assessment, incomplete civil documentation is a common cause of delay. Applicants should check the Department of Home Affairs’ current global visa processing times for family visas before planning.
Required Documents Checklist
Document requirements vary depending on individual circumstances, including custody arrangements and the child’s age.
