Slovenia Family Reunification Visa
The Slovenia Family Reunification Visa allows close family members of a third-country national legally residing in Slovenia to join them, through a Temporary Residence Permit for the Purpose of Family Reunification. The sponsor must generally reside in Slovenia on the basis of a permanent residence permit, or hold a valid temporary residence permit issued for at least one year and have already resided in Slovenia the previous year on that basis (this one-year waiting period is waived for certain categories, including EU Blue Card holders and researchers). Recognised family members include the sponsor’s spouse, registered or long-term partner, minor children, and, in exceptional cases, other relatives where special circumstances justify it. As with every Slovenia Visa category, the final decision on approval rests solely with the competent Administrative Unit (Upravna enota) or Slovenian diplomatic mission.
Eligibility
You may apply for a Slovenia Family Reunification Visa if you are one of the following recognised family members of a sponsor legally residing in Slovenia:
- Spouse, registered civil partner, or partner in a long-term relationship.
- Minor children of the sponsor.
- In exceptional cases, another relative, where the competent authority determines that special circumstances justify family reunification in Slovenia.
The sponsor must reside in Slovenia on the basis of a permanent residence permit, or have held a valid temporary residence permit for at least one year and have already resided in Slovenia on that basis during the previous year (with some exemptions, such as EU Blue Card holders and researchers, from this one-year waiting period). The family must also demonstrate adequate accommodation, health insurance, and sufficient means of support.
Government Visa Fees
| Category | Fee |
| Temporary Residence Permit for Family Reunification (issued/renewed in Slovenia) | Approximately €50, plus a €4.50 application fee and €15.47 card printing fee |
| Application via embassy/consulate abroad | Approximately €100–130, including administrative and card fees |
| Certified translations of civil documents | Additional cost, varies by document and translator |
Fees are non-refundable, whatever the decision on the application.
Processing Time
A family reunification residence permit is usually issued for one year initially and can be extended, typically in 2-year increments, as long as the sponsor maintains their legal residence status. Processing time for the initial application varies depending on the Administrative Unit and the completeness of the file, so applicants are advised to begin the process well in advance of when they intend to relocate. Since 2024, adult family members must also demonstrate basic Slovenian language proficiency (A1 level) when renewing their temporary residence permit for family reasons.
