Slovenia Student Visa
The Slovenia Student Visa covers non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals admitted to a course of study at a recognised Slovenian institution. Depending on the length of the programme, this involves either a national long-stay visa (Type D, valid for up to 1 year, generally suited to exchange students or shorter courses) or a Temporary Residence Permit for the Purpose of Study (Article 44 of the Foreigners Act), which is required for longer full-degree programmes. Short courses of up to 90 days, such as summer schools, may instead be covered by a standard Type C Schengen visa. EU/EEA and Swiss citizens do not need any of these — they can enter freely and simply register their residence at the local Administrative Unit (Upravna enota) if staying more than 3 months. As with every Slovenia Visa category, the final decision on approval rests solely with the relevant Slovenian diplomatic mission, consulate, or Administrative Unit.
Eligibility
You may apply for a Slovenia Student Visa or study residence permit if:
- You have been admitted to a recognised Slovenian educational institution.
- You can demonstrate sufficient financial means to support yourself during your studies.
- You hold health insurance valid in Slovenia, with minimum €30,000 coverage where applicable.
- You hold a valid passport with sufficient remaining validity.
- You can provide a police clearance certificate from your country of residence, where required.

Processing Time
Applicants are strongly advised to apply for the Type D visa at least 3 months before departure, and for the Temporary Residence Permit for Study at least 6 months before their intended arrival in Slovenia, given the additional review involved. Once in Slovenia, students must register their residence address at the local Administrative Unit within the required timeframe, and appointment availability at busier Administrative Units (such as Ljubljana) can affect how quickly the residence permit card itself is issued.
