Malta Digital Nomad Visa Overview
The Malta Digital Nomad Visa, formally the Nomad Residence Permit, is administered by the Residency Malta Agency and allows non-EU nationals who work independently of location to reside in Malta for up to one year, renewable at the Agency’s discretion. It is designed for individuals who work for an employer registered outside Malta, run a business registered outside Malta as a partner or shareholder, or provide freelance/consulting services to clients whose permanent establishment is outside Malta.
Crucially, the Nomad Residence Permit does not authorise the holder to work for a Maltese company or provide services to clients in Malta — all qualifying income must come from outside the country. Holders benefit from a favourable flat 10% tax rate on authorised nomad income under Legal Notice 277 of 2023, and the permit also grants visa-free travel within the Schengen area for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.
Approval of the Nomad Residence Permit is determined solely by the Residency Malta Agency, based on the applicant’s income evidence and the nature of their remote work arrangement.
Eligibility
- Applicant must be a non-EU/EEA/Swiss national who would normally require a visa to travel to Malta.
- Applicant must fall under one of three categories: employed by a foreign-registered employer; a partner/shareholder conducting business for a foreign-registered company; or a freelancer/consultant serving clients with permanent establishment outside Malta.
- Applicant must have a minimum gross annual income of EUR 42,000 (approximately EUR 3,500/month).
- Applicant must not intend to work for a Maltese company or provide services to Malta-based clients.
- Applicant must hold health insurance covering Malta.
- Applicant must provide proof of accommodation in Malta (rental or purchase, with no minimum price requirement).
- For renewal, the applicant must have resided in Malta for at least 5 months over the preceding 12-month period.
