Malta Student Visa Overview
A Malta Student Visa is a National Long-Stay Visa (Type D), issued by Identità’s Central Visa Unit to non-EU nationals accepted onto a full-time course of study in Malta that exceeds 90 days, under the framework of Subsidiary Legislation 217.22. It allows entry and an initial stay of more than 90 days and up to 365 days, after which the student generally continues on a residence permit for the duration of the course.
Applicants must provide proof of enrolment at a recognised Maltese educational institution, along with evidence of sufficient financial means and health insurance. Students following courses exceeding 90 days may, subject to conditions set by Jobsplus, take up limited employment in Malta: those on a full-time course leading to a higher education qualification recognised by MQRIC may work up to 20 hours per week from their first year of study, while other students may generally do so only after their first three months in Malta, and always subject to the applicable sector restrictions.
Approval of a Malta Student Visa is determined solely by Identità’s Central Visa Unit, based on Maltese immigration legislation.

Malta Tourist Visa Processing Time
Identità has indicated that the entire National Visa process — from booking an appointment at the visa application centre to a final decision — can take up to approximately 8 weeks. This includes the time needed for the visa application centre (commonly VFS Global, where applicable) to forward the file and for Identità to complete its review.
Processing can be affected by the completeness of the enrolment and financial documentation submitted, and by the specific mission or centre handling the application. Students are strongly advised to apply as early as possible after securing their admission, given this can be a lengthy process relative to a short-stay Schengen visa.
