Malta Transit Visa Overview
A Malta Transit Visa allows a foreign national to pass through Malta or a Maltese airport on the way to a third country. There are two relevant categories: the Airport Transit Visa (Type A), required by nationals of certain countries to remain within the international transit area of a Maltese airport while changing flights, without formally entering Maltese territory; and the short-stay Visa (Type C), used both for planned stays and for transit that involves actually entering Maltese or Schengen territory.
As Malta is part of the Schengen area, a Type C visa used for transit also allows travel through the wider Schengen area during its validity, subject to the standard 90-days-within-180-days limit. Possession of a visa does not, by itself, give an automatic right of entry — travellers must still satisfy the general entry requirements at the border.
Approval is determined solely by Identità’s Central Visa Unit, based on the traveller’s onward travel documentation and eligibility for the specific transit category required.
Eligibility
- Applicant must have confirmed onward travel to a third country, with Malta (or transit through Maltese airspace/territory) serving only as a stopover.
- Applicant must hold a valid travel document, issued within the last 10 years, valid for at least three months beyond the intended departure from the Schengen area.
- Applicant must hold an onward ticket to the destination.
- For Airport Transit Visa (Type A): applicant must remain within the international transit area and not pass through Maltese border control. Only nationals of specific listed countries require this visa.
- For Visa C used for transit: applicant must meet the same core requirements as a short-stay Schengen visa, including travel insurance and financial proof.
- Applicant must not fall under any category posing a security, public health, or public policy risk.

Malta Tourist Visa Processing Time
As with other Schengen short-stay categories, Transit Visa applications (Type A or Type C) are generally decided within 15 calendar days of submission, under the standard EU Visa Code timeframe. This period may be extended up to 30 days in individual cases, and up to 60 days in exceptional circumstances requiring additional scrutiny.
Given that transit journeys are typically planned around a specific connecting flight or onward route, applicants should apply as early as possible within the standard six-month application window and avoid finalising connecting travel arrangements until the visa is confirmed.
