Vietnam Tourist Visa

The Vietnam Tourist Visa, officially symbolised as DL, is issued under Vietnam’s Law on Entry, Exit, Transit, and Residence of Foreigners (Law No. 47/2014/QH13, as amended by Law No. 51/2019/QH14) to foreign nationals travelling to Vietnam strictly for tourism and leisure purposes. According to the National Portal on Immigration, a DL visa does not permit any business activity in Vietnam. Depending on how it is issued, a Tourist Visa may be obtained as an electronic visa (e-Visa) through the official government portal, a Visa on Arrival for air travellers, or a traditional visa stamped at a Vietnamese Embassy or Consulate abroad. Nationals of countries covered by Vietnam’s visa exemption or e-Visa eligibility lists may have simpler routes available; all other travellers must apply for a DL visa through one of these official channels. As with all Vietnam Visa categories, approval is granted solely at the discretion of the Vietnam Immigration Department.

Eligibility

Based on official Vietnamese government sources, applicants for a Tourist Visa (DL) must generally:

  • Be a foreign national travelling to Vietnam solely for tourism, recreation, or leisure.
  • Hold a passport valid for at least six (6) months beyond the intended entry date, with at least 2 blank pages.
  • Not fall under any category of persons prohibited from entering Vietnam under the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit, and Residence of Foreigners.
  • Provide confirmed onward or return travel plans and, where applicable, a Vietnamese sponsor or invitation, for visas obtained outside the e-Visa system.

Government Visa Fees

Under Vietnam’s Ministry of Finance Circular No. 28/2026/TT-BTC (effective April 1, 2026), which sets fee levels for exit, entry, transit, and residence procedures, the government fee for a standard Tourist Visa issued through the official system is:

Fee TypeAmount
Single-Entry Tourist Visa (DL)USD 25
Multiple-Entry Tourist Visa (DL)USD 50
INR EquivalentInformation may vary depending on the visa category and individual circumstances

Fees are payable online at the time of application (for e-Visa applications) and are non-refundable, even if the application is refused. Visa on Arrival applicants pay an additional stamping fee in cash (USD or VND) at the airport. Applicants should confirm the current fee with the Vietnam Immigration Department or the relevant Vietnamese Embassy/Consulate, as fees are periodically updated by Ministry of Finance circular.

Vietnam Visa Processing Time

According to the National Portal on Immigration, standard e-Visa processing is completed within 3 working days after the application and fee payment are submitted, as prescribed under Vietnam’s Immigration Law. Processing may take longer during peak travel periods, public holidays, or if additional information is requested. Applicants using a traditional visa through a Vietnamese Embassy or Consulate should confirm processing times directly with that mission, as timelines can vary.
