Serbia Transit Visa
A Serbia Transit Visa allows a foreign national to pass through Serbia or a Serbian airport on the way to a third country. Under Serbia’s Law on Foreigners, there are two relevant categories: the Airport Transit Visa, required by nationals of certain countries to remain within the international transit area of a Serbian airport while changing flights, without formally entering Serbian territory; and the short-stay Visa C, used for transit that involves actually entering Serbian territory, such as travelling onward by land.
A foreigner who does not exit the international transit area of the airport during a layover between two flights does not need an Airport Transit Visa at all. Where required, the Airport Transit Visa is issued with a validity of up to six months and allows one or more transits through the international transit area, without the possibility of entering Serbian territory. It is not required for foreigners who are visa-exempt for Serbia, who hold a valid Serbian visa or residence permit, who are family members of Serbian citizens, who hold diplomatic or official passports, or who are aircraft crew members under the Convention on International Civil Aviation.
Approval is determined solely by Serbia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, based on the traveller’s onward travel documentation and eligibility for the specific transit category required.
Eligibility
- Applicant must have confirmed onward travel to a third country, with Serbia (or transit through Serbian airspace/territory) serving only as a stopover.
- Applicant must hold a passport issued within the previous 10 years, valid for at least 90 days after the visa’s last valid date.
- Applicant must hold an onward ticket to the destination.
- For the Airport Transit Visa: applicant must remain within the international transit area and not pass through Serbian border control.
- For Visa C used for territorial transit: applicant must meet the same core requirements as a short-stay visa, including proof of financial means.
- The Airport Transit Visa is not required for visa-exempt nationals, valid visa/residence permit holders, family members of Serbian citizens, diplomatic/official passport holders, or aircraft crew under the Chicago Convention.

Given that transit journeys are typically planned around a specific connecting flight or onward route, applicants should apply as early as possible.
