Poland Family Reunification Visa
The Poland Family Reunification Visa allows close family members of a third-country national legally residing in Poland to join them. The underlying status is a Temporary Residence Permit “for the purpose of family reunification,” governed by the Act of 12 December 2013 on Foreigners. If the family member is outside Poland, they generally apply for a national Type D visa at the Polish consulate in their country of residence, based on the sponsor’s qualifying residence status, and then apply for their own Temporary Residence Permit at the local Voivodeship Office after arriving in Poland. The sponsor must have resided in Poland on a qualifying basis — most commonly, consecutive temporary residence permits for at least 2 years, or certain other qualifying statuses — before family reunification can be requested. As with every Poland Visa category, the final decision on approval rests solely with the competent voivode or, on appeal, the Head of the Office for Foreigners.
Eligibility
You may apply for a Poland Family Reunification Visa if you are one of the following recognised family members of a sponsor legally residing in Poland:
- Spouse, where the marriage is recognised under Polish law.
- Minor children of the sponsor and/or their spouse, including legally adopted children.
- Minor siblings under the sponsor’s guardianship, in specific circumstances recognised by Polish authorities.
- In certain cases involving refugees or beneficiaries of subsidiary protection, direct ascendants (parents) of an unaccompanied minor.
The sponsor must generally reside in Poland on the basis of consecutive temporary residence permits for at least 2 years (with the most recent permit valid for at least 1 year), or hold another qualifying residence status such as a permit for scientific research, highly qualified employment, or long-term researcher mobility. The sponsor must also demonstrate stable and regular income, health insurance, and a place of residence in Poland sufficient for the family.
Government Visa Fees
| Category | Fee |
| National Visa (Type D) for family reunification purposes | €80 (approx. 350 PLN, subject to exchange rate) |
| Temporary Residence Permit application (in Poland, after arrival) | Fee set under Polish regulations on fees for foreigners’ documents — confirm current amount with the Voivodeship Office |
| Family members of Polish/EU citizens applying for related national visas | Free |
The visa application fee is non-refundable, whatever the consul’s decision. Separate costs apply for the Temporary Residence Permit (if the programme exceeds one year) and for translations, apostilles, or health insurance.
Poalnd Family Reunification Visa Processing Time
Under the EU Family Reunification Directive as implemented in Poland, the relevant proceeding should be completed within 9 months, though in practice this can take longer, and authorities may formally extend the deadline, particularly in more complex cases. The consular visa stage, once the Voivodeship Office decision is available, generally follows standard national visa timelines of around 15 to 30 calendar days. Given the combined stages — sponsor eligibility confirmation, Temporary Residence Permit application (if the family member applies from within Poland), or consular visa processing (if applying from abroad) — the overall process can take several months to around a year.
Required Documents Checklist
Requirements are streamlined given the visa’s narrow, short-stay purpose, but confirmed onward flight details are essential.
