Poland Transit Visa

The Poland Transit Visa covers travellers who need to remain in the international transit area of a Polish airport while awaiting a connecting flight, without formally entering the Schengen area. This is known as the Airport Transit Visa (Type A), and it only permits the holder to stay within the airport’s transit zone — it does not authorise entry into Poland or the wider Schengen Area. Whether an Airport Transit Visa is required depends on the applicant’s nationality: Poland requires it for citizens of Afghanistan, Armenia, Bangladesh, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Cuba, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, and Sri Lanka, in addition to certain general exemption rules. If your connection requires leaving the transit area, changing airports, or otherwise entering Polish territory, a standard Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) is required instead. As with every Poland Visa category, the final decision on approval rests solely with the Polish consulate or consular section of the embassy.

Eligibility

You may need a Poland Airport Transit Visa (Type A) if:

  • You are a citizen of Afghanistan, Armenia, Bangladesh, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Cuba, Nigeria, Pakistan, or Somalia, or Sri Lanka.
  • You intend to remain within the international transit area of a Polish airport and do not plan to leave it.

You do not need an Airport Transit Visa (Type A) if you:

  • Hold and are travelling with a diplomatic passport.
  • Hold a residence permit listed in Annex V of the Visa Code, issued by Andorra, Canada, Japan, San Marino, or the United States.
  • Hold a valid visa for a country within the EEA, or for Canada, Japan, or the United States, or are returning from these countries after using such a visa.

Poalnd Transit Visa Processing Time

The consul will generally make a decision on an Airport Transit Visa application within 15 calendar days. In exceptional cases, this period can be extended to 30 or 60 days. Since transit visas are tied to specific flight connections, applicants should submit their application well ahead of their travel date to avoid disruption to their onward journey.

Required Documents Checklist

Valid passport (with sufficient remaining validity)
Completed and signed visa application form, registered via e-Konsulat and printed and signed
Recent passport-sized photograph (3.5 x 4.5 cm, colour, white background)
Visa fee payment receipt
Information demonstrating you do not intend to enter the territory of any Schengen area country
For minors: written parental consent confirmed by a notary, or relevant custody/guardianship documents

Requirements are streamlined given the visa’s narrow, short-stay purpose, but confirmed onward flight details are essential.

Important Notes

An Airport Transit Visa (Type A) does not permit entry into Poland or the wider Schengen Area — it only allows remaining in the international transit zone.
Poland's national list of nationalities requiring this visa (Afghanistan, Armenia, Bangladesh, DR Congo, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iran, Iraq, Cuba, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Sri Lanka) is in addition to general Schengen-wide exemption rules.
If your onward journey requires you to change airports or leave the international transit zone, you need a standard Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) instead.
Visa approval depends solely on the Polish consulate or consular section of the embassy.
If refused, you have the right to request reconsideration within 14 days of receiving the decision.
Fees are non-refundable regardless of the outcome.
