Kenya eVisa

Many travellers still search for a Kenya eVisa, but this system no longer exists in its original form. Kenya operated an online eVisa portal (evisa.go.ke) for several years, but on 5 January 2024, the Government of Kenya officially retired the eVisa and replaced it with the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) — a broader, unified pre-travel clearance system covering tourism, business, transit, family visits, and most other short-term purposes. The eTA is applied for at a new official portal, etakenya.go.ke, and the old evisa.go.ke platform is no longer used for new visa-type applications. As with every Kenya Visa category, the final decision on entry rests solely with Kenya’s Directorate of Immigration Services.

Eligibility

You will generally need to apply for a Kenya eTA (the successor to the old eVisa) if:

  • You are a foreign national visiting Kenya for tourism, business, family visits, conferences, or transit.
  • Your nationality is not exempt under a bilateral visa waiver or the East African Community (EAC) exemption.
  • You hold a valid passport with at least 6 months’ validity beyond your planned arrival date, and at least one blank page.

Diplomatic Mission and international organisation personnel accredited to Kenya are also required to complete an eTA, though standard fees may not apply to them.

Government Visa Fees

CategoryFee
Standard eTA (replacing all previous eVisa categories)USD 30 per traveller
Additional payment processing/bank chargesApproximately USD 1.50–2.00

This is a significant reduction from the old eVisa fee structure, which charged USD 51 for a single-entry visa and USD 101 for a multiple-entry visa. All eTA fees are non-refundable, whether the application is approved or denied.

Kenya Visa Processing Time

Standard eTA processing typically takes 24 to 72 hours (up to 3 working days) from a complete submission, though this can extend during busy periods or where further verification is needed. Applications can be submitted as early as 3 months before travel, and applicants are advised to apply at least a few days to a week ahead of departure. The approved eTA is valid for 90 days from the date of issuance, within which the traveller must arrive in Kenya.

Required Documents Checklist

Valid passport (with at least 6 months' validity beyond the planned arrival date, and at least one blank page)
Recent colour passport photograph (JPEG format, white background)
Confirmed flight booking or travel itinerary
Accommodation proof (hotel booking, invitation letter, or host details)
Return or onward ticket showing departure from Kenya
Yellow fever vaccination certificate, if arriving from a yellow fever endemic country
Official letter from the country of origin/organisation/foreign affairs ministry, for diplomatic or official applicants

Step-by-Step Application Process

Do not use the old evisa.go.ke portal for new applications — it has been replaced.
Visit the official eTA portal at etakenya.go.ke and create an account.
Complete the online application form with your passport, travel, and accommodation details, and select your purpose of travel.
Upload the required photograph and supporting documents.
Pay the USD 30 fee online.
Await approval, typically within 24 to 72 hours.
Print or save your approved eTA and present it, along with your passport, at the Kenya port of entry.

Important Notes

The Kenya eVisa system was fully replaced by the eTA on 5 January 2024 — there is no longer a separate "eVisa" category or process.
The eTA is not tied to a specific visa category the way the old eVisa was; instead, it serves as a unified authorisation covering most travel purposes.
Every traveller, including infants and children, needs a separate eTA application and payment.
Airlines may deny boarding to passengers without an approved eTA.
Kenya no longer issues visas on arrival.
Fees are non-refundable regardless of the outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Kenya still offer an eVisa?
No. Kenya's eVisa system was officially replaced by the Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) on 5 January 2024. All travellers who previously would have applied for an eVisa now apply for an eTA at etakenya.go.ke instead.
Is evisa.go.ke still a valid website to apply?
The evisa.go.ke domain is no longer used for standard visa-type applications — travellers should use the current official portal, etakenya.go.ke, to avoid confusion or unofficial third-party sites.
How much does the Kenya eTA cost compared to the old eVisa?
The eTA costs a flat USD 30 per traveller, a significant reduction from the old eVisa fees of USD 51 (single-entry) and USD 101 (multiple-entry).
How long does the Kenya eTA take to process?
Standard processing takes 24 to 72 hours, though applicants are advised to apply a few days to a week before travel to allow for any delays.
Can I still use an old Kenya eVisa that I already have?
If you hold a previously issued eVisa that remains within its original validity period, it may still be honoured, but for any new trip to Kenya, you will need to apply for the current eTA instead.
