Brazil Tourist Visa
The Brazil Tourist Visa is issued by Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Itamaraty) to foreign nationals travelling to Brazil for recreation, sightseeing, and leisure purposes. According to official guidance, the Visit Visa (VIVIS) is required for citizens from certain countries — such as Australia, Canada, and the United States — who plan to visit Brazil for stays of up to 90 days, without the intention of establishing residence, for tourism, transit, or business purposes. Since 10 April 2025, this requirement has been reinstated for these nationalities based on the principle of diplomatic reciprocity, and from 1 January 2026 the electronic visa (e-Visa) became the permanent, mandatory route for citizens of the United States, Canada, Australia, Mexico, France, Argentina, and more than 20 other previously visa-exempt countries. Travellers from countries without a visa-exemption agreement generally still need a traditional Tourist Visa (VITUR) issued through a Brazilian Embassy or Consulate. As with all Brazil Visa categories, the final decision on approval rests solely with the competent Brazilian consular authorities.
Eligibility
Based on official Ministry of Foreign Affairs guidance, applicants for a Tourist Visa must generally:
- Be a foreign national travelling to Brazil for tourism, recreation, or sightseeing, without the intention of establishing residence.
- Hold a passport valid for at least 6 months, with at least 2 blank visa pages.
- Not hold dual Brazilian citizenship — Brazilian citizens, including dual nationals, are not eligible for any type of Brazilian visa and must travel on a valid Brazilian passport.
- For e-Visa applicants: be a national of a country included in Brazil’s mandatory e-Visa reciprocity list.
- For traditional visa applicants: apply in person or via an authorised visa service company at the Brazilian Embassy or Consulate with jurisdiction over their place of residence.

According to recent Ministry of Foreign Affairs updates, e-Visa applications submitted through the official VFSeVisa portal are being processed quickly, with approvals — including an embedded QR code — issued in as little as 48 hours in many cases. Traditional Tourist Visa (VITUR) applications processed through a Brazilian Embassy or Consulate can take longer, depending on the specific mission and case complexity. Applicants are generally advised to apply at least 1 to 2 weeks before departure, and earlier during high season or for more complex cases.
