Norway Medical Treatment Visa

The Norway Medical Treatment Visa covers two situations. For a planned procedure lasting no more than 90 days, a standard short-stay Schengen visa is generally sufficient. For treatment expected to last longer than 90 days, applicants from outside the EU/EEA must apply in advance for a dedicated residence permit for medical treatment, issued by the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI). This residence permit can only be granted for a maximum of one year in total, and is intended for genuine, pre-arranged medical treatment funded by the applicant’s own resources or public funds from their home country — not for seeking treatment Norway’s health system provides to its own residents. If the applicant needs someone to accompany them, that person may also be granted a corresponding residence permit. As with every Norway Visa category, the final decision on approval rests solely with UDI.

Eligibility

For a short-stay visa (treatment of 90 days or less):

  • You are travelling to Norway for a specific, pre-arranged medical procedure.
  • Your stay will not exceed 90 days within a 180-day period.
  • You (or a financier) can demonstrate sufficient financial means to cover the treatment and stay.

For a residence permit for medical treatment (treatment longer than 90 days):

  • You have received a confirmed offer of medical treatment from an institution in Norway that provides such treatment.
  • You will pay for the treatment using your own money, or public funds from your home country — not Norwegian public health resources.
  • The hospital or outpatient clinic confirms that treating you will not negatively affect health services provided to patients living in Norway.
  • It is likely that you will leave Norway once your residence permit expires.

Government Visa Fees

CategoryFee
Short-stay Schengen visa (planned treatment, up to 90 days)€80 (approx. NOK 900); reduced/exempt categories may apply as for other Schengen visas
Residence permit for medical treatment (over 90 days)Fee set under UDI’s standard fee schedule for this permit type — confirm the current amount with UDI, as fees are updated periodically

Fees are non-refundable, whatever the decision on the application.

Processing Time

Short-stay Schengen visa applications for planned medical treatment generally follow standard timelines, with decisions typically made within 15 calendar days, extendable to 30 or, in exceptional cases, 60 days. Residence permit applications for medical treatment lasting more than 90 days can take longer, since UDI must confirm the treatment offer with the Norwegian institution and assess whether providing the treatment will affect services for Norwegian residents — applicants should apply well in advance of when treatment is expected to begin.

Required Documents Checklist

For the short-stay Schengen visa:

  • Valid passport (with at least two blank pages, valid at least 3 months beyond intended departure)
  • Completed and signed Schengen visa application form
  • Medical documentation confirming the planned treatment and appointment details in Norway
  • Proof of financial means to cover treatment and living costs
  • Travel medical insurance with minimum €30,000 coverage

For the residence permit for medical treatment (over 90 days):

  • Confirmed offer of medical treatment from a Norwegian institution
  • Proof that the treatment will be paid for using your own funds, or public funds from your home country
  • Confirmation from the hospital/outpatient clinic that the treatment will not negatively affect services for Norwegian residents
  • Valid passport
  • Proof of intention and ability to leave Norway once the permit expires

Information may vary depending on individual medical circumstances.

Important Notes

A residence permit for medical treatment can only be granted for a maximum of one year in total.
The applicant must pay for treatment using personal funds or public funds from their home country — this permit is not a route to access Norway's public healthcare system as a resident would.
The treating hospital or clinic must confirm that providing the treatment will not negatively affect health services available to people living in Norway.
A person accompanying the patient may also be granted a corresponding residence permit.
It must be likely that the applicant will leave Norway once the permit expires.
Fees are non-refundable regardless of the outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a visa or a residence permit for medical treatment in Norway?
If your treatment will last 90 days or less, a standard short-stay Schengen visa is generally sufficient. If it will last longer than 90 days, you must apply in advance for a dedicated residence permit for medical treatment from UDI.
How long can I stay in Norway for medical treatment?
The residence permit for medical treatment can be granted for a maximum of one year in total. Shorter treatments of 90 days or less fall under the standard Schengen short-stay visa rules instead.
Who pays for medical treatment under this visa/permit?
You must pay for the treatment yourself, using your own money or public funds from your home country. This route does not grant access to Norway's public healthcare system as though you were a resident.
Can a family member accompany me to Norway for my treatment?
Yes, a person who needs to accompany you can also be granted a corresponding residence permit under this category.
Will my treatment be refused if it might affect care for Norwegian patients?
Potentially. The hospital or outpatient clinic providing your treatment must confirm that treating you will not have a negative impact on the health services provided to patients living in Norway.
