Norway Student Visa (Study Permit)
The Norway Student Visa, officially the study permit or studietillatelse, is required by non-EU/EEA nationals admitted to a full-time programme at a Norwegian university, university college, or vocational school. It is issued by the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) and, unlike some other countries, is applied for through the UDI Application Portal before biometrics and documents are submitted at a Norwegian embassy, consulate, or VFS centre. EU/EEA and Swiss citizens do not need a study permit at all — they can move to Norway freely and simply register their right of residence with the police after arrival. As with every Norway Visa category, the final decision on approval rests solely with UDI.
Eligibility
You may apply for a Norway Student Visa if:
- You have been admitted to a full-time programme at a Norwegian university, university college, vocational school, or folk high school.
- You can demonstrate sufficient funds to cover your living costs and any tuition fees for the year.
- You hold a valid passport with sufficient remaining validity.
- You intend to leave Norway once your studies (and the permit’s validity) come to an end, if you do not later qualify for another type of permit.
EU/EEA and Swiss citizens are exempt from this requirement — they need only register their right of residence with the local police after arrival, and with the National Registry if staying more than six months.

Fees are payable online through the UDI Application Portal and are non-refundable, whatever the decision on the application.

Applicants are strongly advised to apply as soon as they receive their offer of admission and can demonstrate proof of funds, to allow enough time for a decision before their programme begins.
