The Norway Spouse Visa falls under UDI’s “family immigration” category, which allows the foreign husband or wife of a person living in Norway to join them. The exact requirements depend on the sponsor’s status: family immigration with a Norwegian or Nordic citizen follows one route, while family immigration with a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA (a third-country national residing in Norway) follows a related but distinct route, generally requiring the sponsor to hold, or have applied for, a residence permit as a skilled worker. Both routes share the same core conditions: a valid, recognised marriage, an intention to live together in Norway, a minimum age of 24, and a strict income requirement for the sponsor. Eligibility
You may apply for a Norway Spouse Visa if:
- Your marriage or partnership was validly entered into and can be recognised under Norwegian law.
- You and your spouse plan to live together in Norway.
- Neither of you was forced into the marriage, and it is not a marriage of convenience (circumvention marriage).
- Both you and your spouse are at least 24 years old.
- You can document your identity, usually with a valid passport.
- You are not subject to an entry ban to Norway or the Schengen Area.
- If your spouse is not Norwegian or a Nordic citizen, your spouse (the sponsor) must hold, or have applied for, a residence permit as a skilled worker.
- Your sponsor meets the current income requirement (see below).
Unmarried cohabiting partners can also apply under a related route if they have lived together for at least 2 years (with both having had legal residence, if that cohabitation took place in Norway), are both unmarried or divorced, and meet the same age and income conditions — or if they have, or are expecting, a child together.
