A Chile Family Reunification Visa is a Residencia Temporal (Temporary Residence) permit granted by the Servicio Nacional de Migraciones (SERMIG) to foreign nationals who can demonstrate family ties with a Chilean citizen or with a foreigner holding Residencia Definitiva (permanent residence) in Chile. It allows the family member to reside in Chile for up to two years, after which the permit can be renewed or Residencia Definitiva can be requested.
Since 12 February 2022, this application must be submitted through SERMIG’s Portal de Trámites Digitales, using either the “Solicitud de Residencias Temporales para extranjeros fuera de Chile” option (for applicants abroad) or the equivalent option for applicants already inside Chile on a tourist permit. This category is no longer processed through the consular SAC system used for short-stay visas. In practice, the applicant (the family member seeking to join their relative) creates their own account and submits the application, even though the formal requirement under Supreme Decree No. 177 of 2022 places the initial application with the Chilean or permanent-resident sponsor.
Approval is determined solely by the Servicio Nacional de Migraciones, based on the documented family relationship and compliance with the requirements of Decree 177 of 2022.
Eligibility
- Applicant must demonstrate a qualifying family bond with a Chilean citizen or a foreigner holding Residencia Definitiva in Chile.
- The relationship must be supported by official documentation (marriage certificate, birth certificate, or equivalent).
- Applicant must submit a copy of their passport or identity document.
- Applicants aged 18 or older must submit a certificate of no criminal record (Certificado de Antecedentes Penales).
- If applying from within Chile, the applicant must hold a valid Permanencia Transitoria (tourist) permit at the time of application.
- If applying from abroad, no prior permit is required before submitting the Family Reunification application.
- Foreign documents must generally be legalised or apostilled, and translated into Spanish if issued in another language.
