A Chile Student Visa is issued to foreign nationals travelling to Chile to study as a regular student at a state-recognised educational institution or accredited private institution. It covers programmes of up to one year, or, for scholarship holders, for the duration of the scholarship. This is a distinct consular visa category — separate from the general Tourist/Business/Visitor short-stay permit — reflecting the fact that study is a defined purpose in its own right.
Applications are submitted at a Chilean consulate abroad, which reviews the file before forwarding it to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Santiago for a final decision. For students pursuing longer programmes, or those who need to extend their stay beyond the initial visa period, a Residencia Temporal permit under the student subcategory, issued by the Servicio Nacional de Migraciones (SERMIG), may apply instead or subsequently.
