Croatia Transit Visa
The Croatia Transit Visa covers travellers who need to remain in the international transit area of a Croatian airport — such as Zagreb, Split, or Dubrovnik — while awaiting a connecting flight, without formally entering the Schengen area. This is the Airport Transit Visa (Type A), and it only permits the holder to stay within the airport’s international transit zone. Since Croatia joined the Schengen Area on 1 January 2023, it applies the common Schengen list of nationalities requiring an Airport Transit Visa under Annex IV of the Visa Code, and may apply additional national requirements, which can be confirmed with the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs (MVEP). If your connection requires leaving the transit area, clearing passport control, or otherwise entering Croatian territory, a standard Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) is required instead. As with every Croatia Visa category, the final decision on approval rests solely with the relevant Croatian embassy or consulate.
Eligibility
You may need a Croatia Airport Transit Visa (Type A) if:
- Your nationality is listed under Annex IV of the Schengen Visa Code as requiring an Airport Transit Visa, or is otherwise specifically designated by Croatia — confirm the current list with MVEP before travelling.
- You intend to remain within the international transit zone of a Croatian airport and do not plan to leave it or clear passport control.
You do not need an Airport Transit Visa if you:
- Already hold a valid Schengen visa, a residence permit issued by an EU/EEA/Schengen member state, or another recognised exemption.
- Are a family member of a Croatian, EU, or EEA national travelling with the requisite documentation.
- Hold a diplomatic passport, in most cases, or fall under another recognised exemption category confirmed by MVEP.
If you need to leave the transit area, change terminals in a way that requires clearing customs and immigration, or your connection is not covered by the exemptions above, you need a standard Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) instead.

Processing Time
Standard Schengen visa processing, including Airport Transit Visas, generally takes 15 calendar days from a complete submission, though this may extend to 30, or in exceptional cases up to 60 days, if further examination is required. Since transit visas are tied to specific flight connections, applicants should apply well ahead of their travel date to avoid disruption to their onward journey.
