The Croatia Student Visa covers third-country nationals enrolling in a full-time course of study — university, secondary education, or compulsory training exceeding 90 days — at a recognised Croatian institution. Rather than a single visa sticker, the process combines a national long-stay visa (Type D, where the applicant’s nationality requires one to enter) with a temporary stay permit for the purpose of studies, granted and administered by the Ministry of the Interior (MUP). Third-country students are required to obtain a biometric residence permit once in Croatia, regardless of whether they needed a D visa to enter. As with every Croatia Visa category, the final decision on approval rests solely with MUP or the relevant Croatian embassy/consulate.
Eligibility
You may apply for a Croatia Student Visa if:
- You have been admitted to a recognised Croatian higher education institution, secondary school, or compulsory training programme lasting more than 90 days.
- You can demonstrate sufficient means of support for the duration of your studies.
- You hold valid health insurance covering your stay in Croatia.
- You hold a valid passport with sufficient remaining validity.
- Enrolment in a language course alone (such as Croaticum) does not qualify for a student residence permit — this instead falls under the “other purposes” category.

Processing Time
Processing typically takes 4 to 8 weeks from a complete application, though this can extend to around 12 weeks during busy periods such as before the start of the academic year. If your nationality requires a D visa to enter Croatia, the embassy will issue this once the temporary stay for studies has been approved by MUP, allowing you to travel to Croatia and finalise your biometric residence permit there.
