Finland Transit Visa

The Finland Transit Visa, officially the Airport Transit Visa (Schengen Category A), is required by nationals of a specific list of countries who transit through the international area of a Finnish airport during a stopover or flight change, without leaving that transit area. According to the Finnish Border Guard and Ministry for Foreign Affairs, travellers from most visa-required countries do not need a visa to transit through Finland if they remain at the airport between flights and continue their journey outside the Schengen Area — but nationals of a specific list of countries always need an Airport Transit Visa for this purpose, regardless of how short the layover is. Unlike a standard Schengen visa, an Airport Transit Visa does not permit its holder to leave the international transit area of the airport. As with all Finland Visa categories, the final decision on approval rests solely with the competent Finnish consular authorities.

Eligibility

Based on official Finnish Border Guard and Ministry for Foreign Affairs guidance, applicants for an Airport Transit Visa must generally:

  • Be a national of one of the following countries, which specifically require an Airport Transit Visa to transit through Finland: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iraq, Iran, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, or Sri Lanka.
  • Hold a passport or approved travel document valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended date of departure from the Schengen area, issued no more than 10 years before the date of application.
  • Have a confirmed onward flight ticket and travel plan to a destination outside the Schengen Area.
  • Not intend to leave the international transit area of the airport during the layover.
  • Note: certain categories of persons are exempt from the Airport Transit Visa requirement under Article 3(5) of the EU Visa Code.

Processing Time

According to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the standard processing time for a Schengen visa application, including an Airport Transit Visa, is 15 days. This period may be longer if a more detailed examination of the application is required, or if consultation with other Schengen states is legally required for the applicant’s nationality. Because Airport Transit Visas are tied to a specific flight itinerary, applicants should apply well in advance of their travel date to avoid any risk of a missed connection.

Important Notes

An Airport Transit Visa does not permit its holder to leave the international transit area of the airport — travellers needing to leave the airport for any reason, including for accommodation, need a different type of visa to enter Finland.
Only nationals of the specific listed countries always require an Airport Transit Visa; other visa-required nationals generally do not need a visa if they remain within the transit area and continue their journey outside the Schengen Area.
Certain categories of persons are exempt from the Airport Transit Visa requirement under Article 3(5) of the EU Visa Code.
Visa fees are non-refundable, even if the application is refused.
Applicants must have a confirmed onward flight and, where applicable, a valid visa for their final destination.
Providing false or incomplete information may result in visa refusal.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I need a visa if I'm just changing planes in Finland?
It depends on your nationality. If you are from most visa-required countries, you generally do not need a visa if you stay at the airport between flights and continue outside the Schengen Area. However, nationals of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iraq, Iran, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, or Sri Lanka always need an Airport Transit Visa.
2. How much does a Finland Airport Transit Visa cost?
The standard fee is EUR 90, in line with the standard Schengen visa fee.
3. How long does it take to process an Airport Transit Visa?
Standard processing is 15 days, though this may be longer if a more detailed examination or consultation with other Schengen states is required.
4. Can I leave the airport during my layover on an Airport Transit Visa?
No. An Airport Transit Visa only permits remaining within the international transit area of the airport; it does not authorise entering Finland.
5. What happens if I need to leave the transit area for accommodation during a long layover?
If you need to leave the airport for any reason, such as needing accommodation during a long layover, you will need a different type of visa to legally enter Finland, not an Airport Transit Visa.
