Finland Transit Visa
The Finland Transit Visa, officially the Airport Transit Visa (Schengen Category A), is required by nationals of a specific list of countries who transit through the international area of a Finnish airport during a stopover or flight change, without leaving that transit area. According to the Finnish Border Guard and Ministry for Foreign Affairs, travellers from most visa-required countries do not need a visa to transit through Finland if they remain at the airport between flights and continue their journey outside the Schengen Area — but nationals of a specific list of countries always need an Airport Transit Visa for this purpose, regardless of how short the layover is. Unlike a standard Schengen visa, an Airport Transit Visa does not permit its holder to leave the international transit area of the airport. As with all Finland Visa categories, the final decision on approval rests solely with the competent Finnish consular authorities.
Eligibility
Based on official Finnish Border Guard and Ministry for Foreign Affairs guidance, applicants for an Airport Transit Visa must generally:
- Be a national of one of the following countries, which specifically require an Airport Transit Visa to transit through Finland: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Ghana, Iraq, Iran, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, or Sri Lanka.
- Hold a passport or approved travel document valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended date of departure from the Schengen area, issued no more than 10 years before the date of application.
- Have a confirmed onward flight ticket and travel plan to a destination outside the Schengen Area.
- Not intend to leave the international transit area of the airport during the layover.
- Note: certain categories of persons are exempt from the Airport Transit Visa requirement under Article 3(5) of the EU Visa Code.
Government Visa Fees
Under the Ministry for Foreign Affairs’ official price list for services provided by Finnish missions:
| Fee Type | Amount |
| Schengen Visa (Category A) – Airport Transit Visa, standard rate | EUR 90 |
| Free-of-charge cases | Major disaster/humanitarian situations, and certain other exceptional cases at the mission’s discretion |
| INR Equivalent | Information may vary depending on the visa category and individual circumstances |
All fees must be paid in full at the time the application is submitted and are not refunded if the visa is refused.
Processing Time
According to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, the standard processing time for a Schengen visa application, including an Airport Transit Visa, is 15 days. This period may be longer if a more detailed examination of the application is required, or if consultation with other Schengen states is legally required for the applicant’s nationality. Because Airport Transit Visas are tied to a specific flight itinerary, applicants should apply well in advance of their travel date to avoid any risk of a missed connection.
