Czech Republic Family Reunification Visa

The Czech Republic Family Reunification Visa, officially the Long-Term Residence Permit for the Purpose of Family Reunification, is issued by the Ministry of the Interior to third-country nationals who are family members of a person residing in the Czech Republic and wish to live with them for a period longer than one year. According to the Ministry of the Interior’s official Information Portal for Foreigners (ipc.gov.cz), a qualifying family member includes a spouse (including same-sex partnership), a minor or dependent child, an adopted or guardianship-based minor child, or a lone parent over 65 (or of any age if unable to care for themselves for medical reasons). Special provisions also apply to family members of foreigners granted asylum. As with all Czech Republic Visa categories, the final decision on approval rests solely with the Ministry of the Interior.

Eligibility

Based on official Ministry of the Interior guidance, applicants for a Family Reunification Visa/Residence Permit must generally:

  • Be a third-country national who is a qualifying family member — spouse (or same-sex registered partner), minor child, dependent adult child unable to care for themselves for medical reasons, adopted or guardianship-based minor child, or lone parent over 65 (or younger if medically dependent) — of a person residing in the Czech Republic.
  • Intend to live with that family member in the Czech Republic for longer than one year.
  • If applying as a spouse or child, the resident family member must meet at least one legal requirement, such as holding a valid long-term or permanent residence permit for over 15 months (with both spouses at least 20 years old), a valid employee card held for over 6 months, a blue card, an intra-company transfer card, or a residence permit for scientific research (or having at least applied for one of these).
  • Not be in a polygamous marriage recognised as such under Czech law, which is not accommodated for family reunification purposes.

Processing Time

According to the Ministry of the Interior, the standard time limit to process a Family Reunification residence permit application is 60 days. This time limit does not run if the proceedings are suspended, such as when additional documents are requested, or if there is another legal ground for suspension. The same 60-day timeline applies to applications for extending an existing Family Reunification residence permit. Applicants should apply as early as legally permitted — up to 120 days before the current permit’s expiry for extensions — and ensure all required documents are submitted with the initial application to avoid delays.

Step-by-Step Application Process

Confirm your eligibility as a qualifying family member and that your resident family member in the Czech Republic meets the relevant legal requirements.
Gather your civil documents (marriage or birth certificate), passport, proof of accommodation and finances, and medical insurance.
Complete the official application form for a long-term residence permit.
If applying from outside the Czech Republic, contact the relevant Czech diplomatic mission and schedule an appointment; if applying from within, book an appointment with the locally competent Ministry of the Interior office.
Submit your application in person, along with all supporting documents.
Pay the CZK 2,500 administrative fee (CZK 1,000 for minors under 15).
Await the Ministry of the Interior's decision (standard timeline: 60 days).
If approved and applying from abroad, collect your D/VR entry visa at the diplomatic mission and provide proof of travel medical insurance.
Register with the Ministry of the Interior within 30 days of arrival (or within 3 days if entering without a visa), attend your biometric data appointment, and collect your residence permit card.

Important Notes

A Family Reunification permit is valid for as long as the resident family member's own residence permit remains valid, with a minimum of 1 year, or up to 2 years if the resident family member holds permanent residence.
Applications must generally be submitted in person, either at a Ministry of the Interior office within the Czech Republic or at a Czech diplomatic mission abroad.
Czech law does not recognise polygamous marriage; family reunification cannot be granted to an applicant whose spouse already resides in the Czech Republic with another spouse.
Holders of this permit can generally work in the Czech Republic without needing an additional work permit (free access to the labour market).
The administrative fee is non-refundable regardless of the application outcome.
The 60-day processing time limit does not run while the application is suspended, such as when the Ministry requests additional documents.
Providing false or incomplete information may result in refusal.
