Who Can Apply for an OCI Card?
Eligible foreign nationals may apply for an OCI Card based on their connection with India.
OCI eligibility may include:
- Former Indian citizens
- Children of eligible Indian citizens or persons of Indian origin
- Grandchildren of eligible persons of Indian origin
- Great-grandchildren of eligible persons of Indian origin

OCI Card Does NOT Allow
OCI is not the same as Indian citizenship. OCI Cardholders generally cannot:
- Vote in Indian elections
- Contest elections
- Become Members of Parliament or Legislative Assemblies
- Hold specified constitutional positions
- Hold government/public service positions where prohibited
- Purchase agricultural land
- Purchase plantation property
- Purchase a farmhouse
- Obtain an Indian passport merely because they hold OCI status
