Sweden Family Reunification Visa
The Sweden Family Reunification Visa allows a spouse, registered partner, or cohabiting partner of a person residing in Sweden to apply for a residence permit to move to Sweden and live together. Applications are processed by the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) and, for first-time applicants, must generally be submitted from outside Sweden. The person in Sweden (the “anchor person”) must meet a maintenance requirement — being able to financially support themselves and the applicant, and having a home of sufficient size and standard — and applicants must generally show that they plan to live together in Sweden for the duration of the permit period. A dedicated, faster route exists for family members of Swedish citizens who are moving back to Sweden from abroad together with their family. As with all Sweden visa and residence categories, the decision to approve a Family Reunification application rests solely with the Swedish Migration Agency.
Eligibility
- Applicant is the spouse, registered partner, or cohabiting partner of a person legally residing in Sweden (the anchor person)

- Applicant and anchor person plan to live together in Sweden for the duration of the permit period
- Applicant holds a valid passport or travel document
- Applicant can prove the relationship (marriage certificate, or evidence of cohabitation such as a joint rental contract)

Sweden Visa Processing Time
According to the Swedish Migration Agency’s published statistics, 75% of recently decided residence permit applications to live with a partner in Sweden are decided within 14 months of a complete submission. A significantly faster route exists for family members of Swedish citizens moving back to Sweden from abroad: since 12 January 2026, complete digital applications in this specific category are decided within 90 days. Processing speed generally depends on verification of the relationship, the anchor person’s maintenance requirement, and the completeness of the application, including any required interview at the relevant Swedish embassy. Applicants are advised to review the current requirements on migrationsverket.se and apply as early as possible.
