Bulgaria Student Visa
A Bulgaria Student Visa is a long-stay national visa (Type D), issued under Article 15 of the Foreigners in the Republic of Bulgaria Act, for non-EU nationals enrolled in full-time study at an accredited Bulgarian institution. Because a standard degree programme typically runs longer than a single academic year, most students settling in for an extended, multi-year programme apply under Article 15, paragraph 1, which grants a visa valid up to 6 months with a right to stay of up to 180 days. Students enrolled in one-year programmes, postgraduate study, or trainee arrangements may instead fall under Article 15, paragraph 2, valid up to 1 year with a right to stay of up to 360 days.
The Type D visa is only the first step: after entering Bulgaria, students must register with the local Migration Directorate to obtain a residence permit covering the remainder of their studies. Student visas are issued for enrolment in full-time, accredited academic programmes — they are not issued for short language courses or non-accredited courses.
Applications are submitted in person at a Bulgarian embassy or consulate in the applicant’s country of permanent residence, and a personal interview is generally required. Approval is determined solely by the Bulgarian consular authorities.
