Digital Nomad Visa Overview
The Italy Digital Nomad Visa is a national Italy Visa (Type D) for non-EU citizens who perform highly qualified remote work using technology, either as freelancers or as employees or contractors of a company based outside Italy. Formally introduced through Decree Law No. 79/2024 and made operational with the implementing decree finalised in March 2026, it targets experienced professionals rather than entry-level remote workers. Applicants must show a minimum annual income of approximately €28,000 (roughly €2,333 per month), at least six months of prior remote work or freelancing experience, a relevant university degree or equivalent qualification, and health insurance with at least €30,000 in coverage. Importantly, only income earned from work actually performed while in Italy counts toward the threshold; passive income such as rental income or dividends is explicitly excluded. The visa does not directly grant permanent residency but can lead to it after 5 years of lawful, continuous residence. Approval is decided solely by the Italian consulate handling the case.
Government Visa Fees
| Fee Type | Government Fee (EUR) |

The income figure is not a fee but a mandatory financial eligibility threshold. Fees are generally non-refundable, even if the application is refused. Exchange rates fluctuate, so INR values are approximate. Information may vary by consulate; confirm the current fee at vistoperitalia.esteri.it or your competent Italian consulate.
Digital Nomad Visa Processing Time
Processing time for the Italy Digital Nomad Visa varies significantly by consulate, typically ranging from 30 to 120 days. Consulates in Milan, Florence, and San Francisco have reported faster turnaround of around 35 to 45 days, while higher-volume consulates such as Los Angeles, São Paulo, and New York have taken 60 to 70 days or more. Because this is a relatively new visa category launched in 2024 and only fully operational since March 2026, some consulates are still finalising internal procedures, so applicants should confirm current processing expectations directly with their consulate. Within 8 days of arriving in Italy, applicants must apply for their residence permit (permesso di soggiorno).
