Thailand Visa on Arrival (VOA)
The Thailand Visa on Arrival (VOA) is a short-term entry option issued directly at designated Thai international airports, land checkpoints, and harbours to passport holders of specific eligible countries, as published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Immigration Bureau of Thailand. Unlike a Tourist Visa, the VOA does not need to be applied for in advance at an embassy or consulate — travellers apply for it upon arrival in Thailand. According to official Thai sources, the VOA permits a single entry and a stay of up to 15 days, strictly for tourism purposes; it cannot be used for business or work. Passport holders from countries already covered by Thailand’s Visa Exemption scheme generally do not need to use the VOA, since visa exemption already provides a longer stay. As with all Thailand Visa categories, the final decision on granting entry rests solely with the Thai immigration officer at the point of entry.
Eligibility
According to the Immigration Bureau of Thailand and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, applicants for VOA must generally:
- Hold a passport from one of the countries/territories on the official VOA-eligible list.
- Be travelling to Thailand strictly for tourism purposes, for a period not exceeding 15 days.
- Hold a passport valid for at least six (6) months (some sources cite at least 30 days from the date of arrival; confirm current requirements before travel).
- Not fall under any category of persons prohibited from entering Thailand under the Immigration Act B.E. 2522 (1979).
- Hold a confirmed return or onward air ticket departing within 15 days.
- Be able to demonstrate a verifiable place of stay in Thailand.
- Show evidence of adequate finances.
Government Visa Fees
| Fee Type | Amount |
| Visa on Arrival Fee | 2,000 THB per applicant (each family member must pay separately) |
| INR Equivalent | Information may vary depending on the visa category and individual circumstances |
The VOA fee is payable only in cash, in Thai Baht, at the immigration counter, and is non-refundable regardless of the outcome. Currency exchange counters are available at major airports, but travellers are advised to have Thai Baht ready in advance where possible.
Processing Time
The Visa on Arrival is processed on the spot at the port of entry, rather than in advance. According to official guidance, processing at the VOA counter typically takes a short period depending on the volume of arrivals at that time, though queues can form during peak arrival periods. There is no advance application processing time, since the VOA is granted only upon a traveller’s arrival in Thailand at one of the designated checkpoints. Applicants should arrive with all required documents ready to avoid delays at the counter.
