South Africa Business Visa

The South Africa Business Visa is a temporary residence visa issued under Section 15 of the Immigration Act, designed for foreign nationals who intend to establish a new business in South Africa or invest in an existing one in which they will be actively employed. Unlike a Visitor Visa used for short business trips such as meetings, this visa permits the holder to live in South Africa and actively run or manage the business named on the visa.

This visa is intended for entrepreneurs, investors, and business owners who can demonstrate genuine capital available for investment and a viable business plan. Before applying, applicants must obtain a recommendation from the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic), submitted through its official Visa Recommendation System. Only once this recommendation is secured can the Business Visa application be lodged with DHA. The Business Visa is generally issued for a period not exceeding three years at a time.

Approval of a South Africa Business Visa depends solely on the South African Department of Home Affairs, taking into account the dtic’s recommendation, the applicant’s documentation, and compliance with the Immigration Act’s requirements for this category.

Eligibility

  • Applicant must intend to establish or invest in a business in South Africa in which they will be personally employed.
  • A minimum capital contribution of ZAR 5 million available for investment from abroad is generally required, unless a capital waiver is granted for businesses considered to be in the national interest.
  • Applicant must obtain a positive recommendation from the dtic before applying to DHA.
  • At least 60% of the business’s permanent staff complement must be South African citizens or permanent residents.
  • The proposed business must not fall within categories the Minister has listed as undesirable.
  • Applicant must submit proof that the invested capital will be deployed within 24 months of the visa being issued, and again every two years thereafter.
  • Applicant must meet the standard temporary residence requirements — valid passport, police clearance, and medical documentation, among others.

Official government fees for the South Africa Business Visa are confirmed at the time of application through DHA or an authorised VFS Global centre and can differ based on individual circumstances. Information may vary depending on the visa category and individual circumstances. Exchange rates fluctuate daily, so always verify the current INR equivalent before making payment.

South Africa Business Visa Processing Time

Processing time for a South Africa Business Visa is generally longer than for short-stay categories, given the additional dtic recommendation step and the depth of financial and business documentation involved. The dtic recommendation itself is a separate process handled before the DHA visa application can be submitted, and applicants should factor this into their overall timeline.

Once the DHA application is lodged, processing follows the same document-verification and adjudication process as other temporary residence categories, and can be affected by the completeness of the application, the specific mission or VFS centre, and DHA’s current workload. DHA has acknowledged historic backlogs in visa processing and has issued periodic concessions for affected applicants. The passport is returned via the same application centre or mission once a decision is made. Applicants are advised to begin the process, including the dtic recommendation, well ahead of any planned relocation date. Information may vary depending on the visa category and individual circumstances.
